The Poyvagal Theory
Most of us know what it’s like to feel unsafe — a racing heart, a stomach in knots, the sense that something’s wrong even when we can’t name it. We also know what it feels like to be safe — the deep breath that finally lands, the ease in our body, the way love feels possible again.
Polyvagal theory explains why those shifts happen. It shows us how the body moves between states of connection, survival, and shutdown — and, more importantly, how we can learn to guide it back toward calm. This isn’t just theory. It’s a roadmap for trauma recovery, emotional regulation, and building real resilience.
In this series, we’ll explore the nervous system through a polyvagal lens. We’ll look at why trauma lives in the body, not just the mind, and why healing requires more than positive thinking. We’ll connect science with somatic practices — the small, body‑based tools that help you feel grounded, connected, and safe enough to thrive.
You’ll learn to recognize the three main states of your nervous system:
- The ventral vagal state (safe and social) — where love, curiosity, and connection happen.
- The sympathetic state (fight or flight) — where the body mobilizes to protect you.
- The dorsal vagal state (freeze or shutdown) — where the body conserves energy and withdraws.
We’ll talk about how to identify your own patterns, gently shift them, and build a nervous system that can handle life’s ups and downs without burning out. Every article will include reflection prompts or downloadable worksheets so you can track your own healing process step by step.
Healing Your Nervous System for Safety and Connection
This series builds on what we’ve already explored in the Love Hormones and Stress Hormones series. Those covered the chemical messengers that drive our emotions; this series maps the system that tells those hormones when to fire in the first place. Together, they form a complete picture of why we feel the way we do — and how we can create lasting change.
