Health Is Not a Moment, but a Lifestyle

Health Is Not a Moment, but a Lifestyle

Patient education is one of the most important aspects of medicine. Many patients come to alternative medicine practitioners after years of relying solely on Western medicine. They’ve taken every pill, undergone every surgery, and by the time they seek acupuncture or herbal remedies, they often have delusional expectations—believing a single treatment will fix everything.

To be fair, I’ve seen acupuncturists who claim to “fix” everything in one session, but the truth is that the problem usually returns within a week. This isn’t healing; it’s a temporary illusion. Real medicine requires a holistic approach—a whole person, whole body, whole mind, whole lifestyle approach. Educating patients on realistic expectations is everything, especially as they begin to change the lifestyle habits that have contributed to their health issues. The exception to the rule is when there is an acute injury.

This process takes time. Toxic thinking (stinking thinking) that leads to toxic living can be deeply ingrained, and many patients don’t want to hear that they need to change just about anything about their lives. We are a pretty self centered and ego driven culture, and the result of that is “I know best”. The only problem is we DON’T always knoe best, and when we need help, there is an abrasive ego in the way, refusing to accept any words of wisdom. While acupuncture can help, it does in fact works best when it’s integrated as part of a new, healthier lifestyle. The same goes for herbal medicine. Herbs can be incredibly effective, but they work best for those who primarily rely on them, rather than those who predominantly use Western medicine.

I see this every day—patients who never use Western medicine often experience the best results with herbs. Being healthy isn’t about a single moment or a quick fix; it’s about a lifestyle. Acupuncture can’t magically reverse decades of poor choices or a lifetime of processed food that led to metabolic disease and obesity, but it can start the journey toward change. It can become part of a new path, a new lifestyle. A new lifestyle is not a punishment, it is a gift.

Health is not a moment. It’s a lifestyle. And this is why patient education is so vital. Without understanding this, we can’t expect true healing.
