Gua Sha Increased Skin Circulation by 400% in a Published Study

One of the most impressive findings in gua sha research has nothing to do with opinions, photographs, or beauty trends. Researchers measured it directly.

Facial Gua Sha Treatment

In a study published in Explore, researchers used laser Doppler imaging to measure blood flow before and after gua sha treatment. The results showed a fourfold increase in local microcirculation. In practical terms, blood flow increased by approximately 400% in the treated area immediately following treatment.

The increase was not brief. Elevated circulation remained statistically significant throughout the entire 25-minute observation period. Researchers also found that participants experienced immediate reductions in muscle pain, and no adverse reactions were reported.

Although the study was designed to investigate pain relief rather than cosmetic outcomes, the findings help explain why gua sha has become such a popular facial treatment. Blood carries oxygen, nutrients, immune cells, and growth factors to the skin and underlying tissues. Improved circulation also supports the removal of metabolic waste products from the area.

This temporary surge in circulation may contribute to the brighter complexion, healthy color, and refreshed appearance often seen after treatment. While the study did not examine collagen production or wrinkle reduction, it demonstrated a measurable physiological effect using modern imaging technology rather than subjective observation.

Nearly twenty years after publication, this study remains one of the most frequently cited pieces of gua sha research because it documented an objective biological response: a 400% increase in local circulation following treatment.
