Trauma and the Nervous System
The vagal system, part of the parasympathetic nervous system, has two branches: ventral and dorsal. The ventral vagal system promotes joy, relaxation, and social bonding, while the dorsal system triggers shutdown responses and transcendental states during extreme stress. The sympathetic system prepares for fight or flight. Cranial nerves also play a vital role in these responses.
